In honor of former Cowley College golfer Brian Groves, Cowley College sophomore Taverli Tennant was named this year’s Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship recipient during the 30th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Memorial Golf Tournament Saturday at Ark City Golf & Fitness.
Brian Groves (Class of 1998) was a member of the Tiger golf team before moving on to Southwestern College in Winfield. He was tragically killed in a one-vehicle accident in 2002.
Brian Groves’ father, Mike, was on hand to present Tennant with the award.
“I know that Brian would love to be here playing in this tournament and would be glad to see all the people that could come out and honor the college and his memory,” Mike Groves said.
Tennant is a member of the Lady Tiger softball team. Tennant, the conference’s Newcomer of the Year, was named a Third Team All-American. She led the Lady Tigers in nearly every offensive category by batting .471 with 16 home runs and 76 runs batted in. She added 24 doubles, five triples, and 18 stolen bases.
“Being from Ark City, this is a great honor and scholarship to receive,” Tennant said. “I hope to live up to this honor, and this scholarship will push me forward.”
