ALTAMONT – Winfield scored on offense, defense and special teams, but still came up short at Labette County.
The Vikings fell behind 13-0 early. Keller Gibson scored on a 47-yard run, and soon after, Carson Andes had a 35 yard fumble return for touchdown. Down 19-12, Dane Chattam returned a kickoff 83 yards for a Viking TD.
The two point try gave Winfield a 20-19 lead. Winfield had a chance to put it away but couldn’t convert a 4th and goal at the 1. Labette then went 99 yards in 8 plays for a TD, to win 27-20.
Winfield is 0-2 and at Augusta on Friday at 7.
SALINA – Salina Central lost to Arkansas City 31-30 back in September of 2024, but on Friday they enacted some revenge.
The Mustangs blew past the Bulldogs, posting a 49-13 victory. Salina Central improved to 2-0 on the young season.
The host Mustangs built a 35-0 halftime lead.
Freshman Brake Ruyle replaced an injured Jordey Pierce at quarterback for Ark City and threw a pair of second half touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
Ark City is 1-1 and will host Andover Central on Friday at 7.
ANDALE – Quarterback Colten Elmore and wideout Jackson Curry were bright spots for a Wellington Crusaders team that lost 77-20 to defending 3A champ Andale.
In the first half alone, Elmore threw for more than 200 yards and Curry was on the receiving end of three of those completions for 146 yards.
But after tying the ball game at 8-8 on a Jalik Armstong run into the endzone, the Crusaders could do nothing to slow the Indians. Andale senior quarterback Sam Harp ran for 300 yards in the first two quarters and Andale’s offense had 484 yards of total offense before halftime.
The Indians didn’t complete a pass in the first half. Andale improves to 2-0. Wellington falls to 1-1.
The Crusaders are in Clearwater Friday at 7.
