FOOTBALL RECAP: Winfield wins a game rife with penalties; Ark City loses

TOWANDA – The Winfield Viking football team captured their first win of the season and spoiled the Circle Thunderbird Homecoming game winning 28-21.

The Vikings scored on the opening drive of the game, 5 plays 66 yards, as Elijah Bergeson ran in the touchdown from 18 yards out. 

A week after Kellen Gibson threw for 340 yards, and Evan Hutto had 275 yards receiving (both school records) Monty Lewis’s team focused more on the ground game as his team rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns.  

After falling behind 13-6, Winfield scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the 2nd quarter to lead 21-13.

The game was marred by 27 combined accepted penalties that included two player elections, one for each team. Multiple sideline infractions were also called.

Winfield, 1-4, will welcome Wellington to town for Homecoming on Friday.

MAIZE — Maize South quarterback Reign Illian accounted for eight total touchdowns Friday night, leading the Mavericks to a 56-21 win over Arkansas City. Illian threw for six scores and added two more on the ground.

Ark City quarterback Jordy Pierce threw for more than 300 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.

The Bulldogs fell to 1-4 on the season and will travel to Goddard Eisenhower on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

WELLINGTON Wellington survived a wild homecoming shootout Friday night, edging Augusta 49-48 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Crusaders led 43-27 with just over three minutes to play, but Augusta stormed back with three late touchdowns to pull within one with 21 seconds remaining. The Orioles went for a two-point conversion and the win, but quarterback Brody Haskell was stopped two yards short of the goal line. Wellington recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the victory.

Quarterback Colton Elmore threw for 276 yards and five touchdowns, connecting with Emerson Brownlee for three scores on just three catches for. Milo Elder added two touchdown receptions, while Jalik Armstrong broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run and Zakhyon Roberts added a 49-yard score in the fourth quarter.

Wellington’s offense rolled up 557 total yards but made things interesting by converting just one of eight PAT attempts. Augusta nearly matched the output, finishing with 559 yards of offense behind Haskell’s 322 passing yards and running back Owen Roberts’ four rushing touchdowns.

Wellington travels to Winfield on Friday. Augusta fell to 1-4.
