An investigation continues into a weekend alley shooting off Main Street, as detectives work to identify those involved in the gunfire that injured a 28-year-old man late Saturday, Winfield Police said through a written statement released Monday.

Officers were called just after 11 p.m. to the east alley in the 1000 block of Main, where they found the Winfield man with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to William Newton Hospital and later flown to Wichita for further treatment. Police said he was released from medical care on Sunday.

According to early reports, a verbal dispute had broken out between several people in the alley before some of the individuals began to leave in a vehicle. Shots were fired from inside that vehicle, striking the victim.

No arrests have been made, and investigators said the case remains active. Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the investigation.
