The Winfield Viking boys basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 76-45 loss at Augusta in the first round of the KSHSAA West Sub-State Tournament.
The Vikings fell behind 4-2, but an Eli Tagg 3-pointer gave Winfield its first — and only — lead of the game at 5-4. Augusta responded with seven straight points and took an 18-9 lead into the second quarter.
The Orioles stretched their lead to 13 at halftime, going into the break up 33-20. Augusta’s offense continued to roll in the second half, outscoring Winfield 43-25 to secure the 31-point win.
Augusta, which was 6-8 at one point this season, has now won 10 straight games and will play at Andale on Saturday night.
Winfield was led in scoring by Kellen Gibson with 13 points. Le’Gend Riley added 11, and Evan Hutto finished with eight.
The game marked the final appearance for seniors Gibson and Hutto. Hutto recently eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career at Winfield.
The Vikings finished the season with a 9-15 record.
