Charles Leroy Hensley
1939 - 2026

Charles Leroy Hensley, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away March 8, 2026, at William Newton Hospital.

Leroy was born on February 15, 1939, in Lebo, Kansas. He spent the early part of his life living at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. Throughout his youth, Leroy lent a helping hand to many local farmers across the county during harvest and haying season. In the early 1960s, he began working at Winfield Iron and Metal. When the state hospital closed, Leroy had his own apartment in town and became a fixture at various restaurants throughout the community. While working, Leroy enjoyed breakfast almost daily at Bleu’s Cafe, cherishing the company of his many friends and fellow community members. He also enjoyed fishing for flathead at the dam with his many fishing buddies.

His tenure at Winfield Iron and Metal came to a close after he suffered a massive stroke and moved to Resthaven. Leroy will be remembered for his hard work, dedication, and the warmth he shared with those around him.

Leroy’s survivors include his beloved friends and “adopted family” of the community of Winfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Sam.

Those wishing to honor Leroy by leaving a memorial, may do so to Resthaven or to the William Newton Hospital Healthcare Foundation. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
