Winfield resident killed Saturday night in crash on 77 near Strother Field

A Winfield man was killed late Saturday night in a two-vehicle crash at a U.S. 77 intersection south of Winfield near Strother Field.

The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m. at U.S. 77 and 202nd Road, according to a report from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 48-year-old James Aikins, of Winfield, was turning from the west side of U.S. 77 onto northbound U.S. 77 when it entered the path of a southbound 2015 Chevrolet Trax.

The Trax, driven by 36-year-old Rebecca Curran, of Arkansas City, struck the Jetta in the intersection. Continue below ad.

Aikins was pronounced dead at the scene. Portions of the roadway were closed for some time as an investigation was conducted.

Curran was transported by Winfield EMS to Wesley Medical Center with injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
