The Kansas Department of Transportation has awarded a nearly $67.8 million contract for a major reconstruction project on U.S. 77 in Cowley County.

Pearson Construction LLC, of Wichita, received the $67,798,669.93 contract to replace pavement on approximately 8.6 miles of U.S. 77 from about 1.9 miles north of the U.S. 77/U.S. 166 junction in Arkansas City to the Walnut River bridges on the south side of Winfield.

The project includes complete pavement replacement, highway preservation work, a new highway alignment on the south side of Strother Field and re-decking of the southbound bridge over the BNSF railroad.

According to KDOT, the new alignment is intended to improve the highway corridor while preserving long-term mobility between Arkansas City and Winfield.

The project is one of the largest highway investments in Cowley County in recent years and is part of KDOT’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, or IKE, a 10-year, $10 billion transportation program focused on preserving, modernizing and expanding the state’s highway system.
