Man is injured Wednesday in ultralight plane crash in rural Cowley County

A 76-year-old Wichita man was injured Wednesday afternoon after the ultralight aircraft he was flying lost engine power and crashed in rural eastern Cowley County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 4:27 p.m. in the 7000 block of 131st Road, about 11 miles east of Udall.

Investigators said the pilot, identified as Melvin L. James, 76, of Wichita, was flying a North Wing Maverick 2RT ultralight aircraft when the engine began to lose power. James attempted to land the aircraft, but it crashed before a safe landing could be completed. Continue below ad.

James, who was wearing a safety restraint, suffered suspected minor injuries. He was flown by medical helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment.

The aircraft sustained damage in the crash and was removed from the scene by its owner.

The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the incident.
