WINFIELD — Ronald Williams Sr. and Kelly George jointly planned to kill their children before taking their own lives in Tuesday’s shootings that left six members of a Winfield family dead, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Friday evening.
The KBI said evidence gathered during the investigation indicates Williams, 53, and George, 44, “jointly shared culpability for premeditated plans to kill their children and then themselves.”
The finding represents a significant development in the investigation into the Aug. 11 deaths in the 400 block of West Ninth Avenue in Winfield. Williams and George were found dead along with four children — Carol Williams, 9; Ronald Williams Jr., 7; Sarah Williams, 5; and Kelly Magee-Williams, 3.
Investigators now say they do not believe an argument or physical altercation preceded the homicides that morning.
Instead, the KBI said Williams and George displayed erratic behavior leading up to the shootings, including a pattern of making nonsensical statements to law enforcement, neighbors and others in the community.
Investigators also uncovered documentation showing George had purchased a Taurus .38 Special revolver in February 2025.
The same firearm was found at the scene, according to the KBI.
At this time, investigators said there is no evidence suggesting anyone other than Williams and George was responsible for the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing. Once completed, the KBI said its findings will be presented to the Cowley County Attorney.
No further information will be released at this time, according to the KBI.
