Arkansas City firefighters will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks with a free memorial 5K next week.
The Cherokee Strip FOOLS, with support from Ark City Fire/EMS, will host the walk and run from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 11th, at the Poplar Walking Trail.
Participants can carry a commemorative badge featuring the name and photograph of one of the 343 New York City firefighters killed at the World Trade Center — and complete the 3.1-mile course in that firefighter’s memory.
The event is inspired by New York’s Tunnel to Towers 5K and the story of firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in his gear after traffic was stopped, heading toward the Twin Towers. He died while trying to save others.
There’s no registration or entry fee, and people can walk, run or simply attend. Complimentary food will also be available while supplies last.
Organizers hope to make the memorial 5K an annual Ark City tradition.
