Cowley College has named Avery Smith of Girard its September 2026 Student of the Month.
Smith, a mass communications major, is a 2025 graduate of Girard High School and holds a 3.93 GPA at Cowley.
She serves as photo editor for the college’s Media Club and is also involved with Hope Squad, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Senate, Student Ambassadors and the Resident Assistant program.
Smith works at Renn Memorial Library through the college’s work-study program and operates her own photography business, Avery Marie Photography, shooting senior portraits, family sessions, events and weddings.
Her community service has included volunteering with Angels in the Attic, American Legion apple pie baking and World Kindness Day activities at an elementary school.
Smith said she chose Cowley after receiving a mass communications scholarship and visiting the campus.
“I loved how welcoming everyone on the campus was,” Smith said. “Even on the visit, I could tell everyone cared about student success.”
After graduating from Cowley, Smith plans to attend Kansas State University and pursue a degree in advertising and public relations.
