The Arkansas City Police Department is reminding motorists to slow down as summer travel season brings more vehicles to Kansas roadways.
The department will join law enforcement agencies across the country in the national Speeding Catches Up With You traffic safety campaign, which runs July 7 through July 15. During the campaign, motorists can expect increased law enforcement presence on local roads.
Police said speeding is an aggressive driving behavior that puts everyone at risk, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, obeying posted speed limits and adjusting speeds for road, traffic and weather conditions can help prevent crashes and save lives.
In addition to increasing the risk of serious crashes, speeding can reduce a driver’s ability to maintain control of a vehicle, increase stopping distances, lessen the effectiveness of occupant protection systems and lead to higher fuel consumption and travel costs. Continue below ad.
