City of Ark City readying for annual recognition of the city’s top students

Arkansas City will recognize dozens of local students this month through its longstanding Outstanding Student Award program, with finalists and top scholarship winners to be announced at two events in April.

According to a news release from the City of Arkansas City, the program was established by the City Commission in 1984 to honor students who show academic excellence and a strong commitment to their community.

Students are nominated each year by teachers, staff and administrators. A committee appointed by the mayor and City Commission reviews nominations and interviews each student before selecting three finalists from each school. One student from each group is then chosen as that school’s top honoree.

From those top students, one will be named the overall City of Arkansas City Outstanding Student of the Year and awarded a $1,000 scholarship. The first runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship, and the second runner-up will receive a $250 scholarship.

The Outstanding Student Award Reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 6, at the Cowley College Brown Center.

Finalists will then be recognized at the Outstanding Student Award Banquet at 6:30 p.m. April 20 in the Wright Room at Cowley College, where the overall winners will be announced.

This year’s nominees include students from Arkansas City Middle School, Arkansas City High School and Cowley College. Continue below ad.
