Fire in South Haven destroys home and kills one person Sunday

A structure fire Sunday night in South Haven claimed the life of one person, according to a report from Sumner Newscow.

Around 9:15 p.m., the South Haven Fire Department was dispatched to 111 N. Kickapoo for a structure fire that was reported to be fully involved. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the original structure, but one civilian fatality was reported at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name pending notification of family members.

Responding agencies included the South Haven Fire Department, Sumner County Emergency Management, Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, Caldwell EMS, Caldwell Fire Department, Wellington Fire Department, and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“The South Haven Fire Department extends its condolences to the family of the victim and thanks the agencies that responded,” South Haven Fire Chief Seth Brown said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
