The Legacy Regional Community Foundation has awarded a $6,900 grant to Cowley County Fire District 3 to support improvements to its training facility in Burden.
The volunteer fire and emergency medical service department, which serves Cowley County, recently completed its first significant remodel since the station was built in the mid-1980s. The upgrades include improved space for gear storage and decontamination following fire and EMS calls.
“This grant has the potential to benefit everyone living in Cowley County,” Fire Chief Chris Cannon said. “The firefighters and EMS responders who train here serve departments across the county. This project supports public health, education and overall readiness for emergency response.”
The department hosts multiple monthly training sessions and regional certification courses that draw participants from communities including Atlanta, Cambridge, Dexter, Udall, Winfield and Arkansas City, as well as out-of-county agencies. It also recently relaunched a junior firefighter program for ages 14 to 17.
Other grant funding and operations money helped to start the remodel, which was completed with the Legacy grant money, Legacy director Yazmin Wood said.
