Police arrested a Winfield man Thursday they said was uncooperative with officers conducting a battery investigation and then grabbed the firearm of an officer attempting to take him into custody. No injuries were reported.

38-year-old Kevin S. Redford remained in the Cowley County Jail on Tuesday, according to online records. Winfield Police said Redford did grab ahold of an officer’s holstered weapon.

The weapon, however, was never fully pulled from the holster due to an officer intervening, according to Police Chief Robbie DeLong. Redford was transported to jail without further incident.

Booking charges included aggravated assault, battery and assault. Bond is set at $10,950.

Around 6:25 p.m. the day of the incident, police were dispatched to Walnut Towers in the 1200 block of Menor in Winfield for the report of an open 911 call. They arrived and made contact with a person claiming to be the victim of battery.

As officers attempted to speak with Redford, he refused to open his door and a search warrant had to be obtained, DeLong said. Officers then forced their way into the residence and took Redford into custody.

He then made the attempt to grab the firearm.
