Work on a nearly $273,000 street improvement project along Madison Avenue in Arkansas City is expected to begin Wednesday or Thursday, according to city officials.
Pearson Construction LLC will complete a mill and overlay project on Madison Avenue between Eighth Street and the Arkansas River bridge.
The work will be completed in phases, and motorists should expect temporary traffic disruptions and delays during construction.
“We expect this to be a fairly quick project,” City Manager Randy Frazer said. “The City of Arkansas City appreciates the community’s patience as these street improvements are completed.”
The Arkansas City Commission approved the project June 16 and awarded the contract to Pearson Construction for an amount not to exceed $273,070.20.
The majority of the project will be funded through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s City Connecting Link Improvement Program, which helps municipalities maintain and improve streets that connect to state highways.
KDOT will cover 90 percent of eligible construction costs, approximately $245,763. The city will pay the remaining 10 percent, approximately $27,307, using money already allocated in its Special Highway Fund.
Arkansas City will also be responsible for additional expenses not covered by KDOT, including engineering, utility adjustments and any necessary property-related costs.
The project is part of the city’s ongoing street maintenance efforts.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down near construction crews, watch for workers and equipment, and allow additional travel time until the work is completed.
