Ark City schools superintendent Ron Ballard announced last week he will retire at the end of the 2025–26 school year, concluding a 28-year career with USD 470.

Ballard shared the decision in a message to staff, saying the choice was not easy but that the timing felt right for both him and USD 470. He said he is proud of the work accomplished during his tenure and grateful to serve alongside staff committed to students.

“Together, we’ve faced challenges, celebrated successes, and stayed focused on doing what’s best for kids,” Ballard wrote. He also cited responsible financial management as a point of pride during his time with the district.

The announcement comes as USD 470 moves forward following the recent passage of two bond issue measures. Voters approved the measures supporting facility improvements, safety upgrades and the development of a centralized early childhood center.

Ballard said he plans to remain fully engaged through his final year and will work closely with the USD 470 Board of Education to support a smooth leadership transition.

“It has been a privilege to work with you in serving our students and our community,” Ballard said.
