The following statement was released Tuesday afternoon by Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti:
On Dec. 9, 2025, during an active investigation in the 1500 block of Main Street in Winfield, Deputies located unclaimed property at the scene.
The item was collected and transported to the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office for further examination.
During the evaluation process, an additional item was discovered that appeared to be an unknown device. In accordance with safety protocols, the Wichita Bomb Squad was contacted and responded to retrieve the item.
For the safety of the public, the area south of the Cowley County Courthouse was temporarily closed during the response.
The investigation remains ongoing. No further details are available at this time.
