A City of Udall maintenance worker rescued a non-ambulatory resident from a burning home Thursday morning before a fire heavily destroyed the two-story house and left two firefighters with second-degree burns.
According to Cowley County Fire District IV, city maintenance workers were working from a bucket truck on the east side of Udall when they spotted smoke around 11:15 a.m.
The workers located the fire at 106 Doyle Drive, where one of the maintenance workers removed a non-ambulatory resident from the house and moved the person into the garage.
The home sustained heavy fire damage to both the first and second stories and is considered a total loss.
Fire officials said the apparent cause was a fire that began on a deck at the rear of the residence. The fire then burned through French doors and spread into the home.
Two Udall firefighters suffered second-degree burns during the response but were able to continue firefighting efforts, according to Rural Fire District IV. No additional information on their injuries was immediately released.
Multiple area agencies responded to assist, including Winfield Fire/EMS, Mulvane Fire Rescue, Mulvane EMS, Sumner County Fire District No. 9 in Belle Plaine and the Derby Fire Department.
The Cowley County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene.
