Thanks to an early literacy grant through the Kansas Health Foundation, Ark City Public Schools is able to share family literacy bags with multiple community organizations.

Cowley County Head Start Director Tara Taylor said early childhood, or birth to age five, is the most important for a child’s future.

“It provides the foundation for a child to learn, grow, and thrive,” Taylor said in a news release from USD 470 Tuesday. “Ninety percent of brain development occurs by the time the child is five years old.”

These family literacy bags contain a calendar of parent/child activities, a counting/sorting activity, books, and local resources. They will be shared with local partners such as the police and fire departments, Angels in the Attic, Manna Ministries, and Rooted Ministries.

“We are hopeful these resources will help reach more families and encourage parents to talk with, read, and engage with their young children,” Taylor said. “Parents are the key to building their child’s brain. We’re all in it together,”
