OXFORD — A waterline break has prompted the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to issue a boil water advisory for the City of Oxford public water supply system in Sumner County.
The advisory took effect Saturday, Jan. 24, after the waterline break caused a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Loss of pressure can reduce chlorine levels and increase the risk of bacterial contamination.
Customers are advised to boil tap water for one minute before drinking, cooking or food preparation, or use bottled water. Ice cubes should be discarded, and ice from automatic icemakers should not be used.
If tap water appears dirty, residents should flush water lines until the water runs clear. Dishes and food-contact surfaces should be disinfected by soaking for at least one minute in clean tap water mixed with one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled, though children should be supervised to ensure water is not swallowed. Individuals with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult a physician.
The advisory will remain in effect until testing at a certified laboratory confirms the water is safe. Only KDHE can rescind a boil water advisory.
For questions, residents may contact the Oxford water system at 620-455-2223 or KDHE at 785-296-5514.
