In the girls game, Winfield fell behind 13-2 early in the first quarter but outscored VC 12-2 the rest of the way and trailed just 15-14 after a quarter. Valley Center put together two good quarters after that, outscoring Winfield 28-7 and that propelled them to a 55-34 win.

The 34 points scored by Winfield was their season high so far.  In the postgame interview, head coach Jason VenJohn was happy with his teams resiliency but stated that their defense needs to keep teams in the 40s to have a better chance at winning.

“We aren’t going to be a team that scores in the fifties, so we need to get better defensively.”  Sophomore Ansley McCaslin led Winfield in scoring with 10 points.  Avery Davison for Valley Center led all scorers with 24.

In the boys game, Winfield trailed by just three at halftime, 31-28.  But Valley Center junior Ray J Logan, who was benched for much of the first half after he received a technical foul, put his team on his back in the third quarter, scoring 17 of the Hornets 29 points.

They outscored Winfield by 15 in the quarter, and eventually built their lead to 23 points before Winfield closed the gap.  Valley Center won the game 70-57.

Winfield senior Evan Hutto led all scorers, as he connected on six three-pointers, was 7-7 at the free throw line, and finished with a season high 31 points. Winfield freshman Le’Gend Riley had 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Logan led Valley Center with 24 points.

The Winfield girls are now 1-3, the boys are 2-2.  Both teams will play at Coffeyville on Monday, before returning for home games on Tuesday vs Circle and Friday vs Augusta.
