August Lo, 98, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 3, 2025, at his home.
Born April 13, 1927, in Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii, he was the son of Yui Pin Lo and Carrie Kalina Kaaemoku. He was raised and received his education in Hawaii. He received his Vocational Diploma from Smith-Hughes Agriculture in 1942. He later returned to obtain his high school diploma from Aiea High School in 1978.
He served in the United States Army from February 1946 to May 1947 and in the Hawaii Army National Guard from June 1948 to June 1952. August was united in marriage to Aurora Malapit on August 6, 1949, at the Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii.
August worked for the Hawaiian Testing Laboratory, which was later purchased by Bonded Materials. He worked in research and quality control and significantly impacted the development of Quikrete while working for Bonded Materials. He was a main contributor to the construction of the elevated highway in Honolulu.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held numerous positions, including the Aiea Ward Bishopric, Aiea Ward Bishop, Mililani I Ward Bishop, High Councilman for Mililani Hawaii Stake, Mililani Stake Presidency, and Mililani Stake Patriarch. He was highly revered and respected by the members of the church and all who knew him. He was active in the scouting program and became an Honorary Eagle Scout. He and Aurora moved to Winfield, Kansas in October of 2014. Aurora preceded him in death on June 20, 2015.
His family includes his children, Michael August Lo and wife, Jocelyn Medeiros of Saratoga Springs, UT; Laura Puanani Johnson of Orem, UT; Aurene Lokelani Mallory and husband, Clinton Cordell, II of Baton Rouge, LA; Russell James Lo of Salt Lake City, UT; Julie-Ann Haunani Ruggles and husband, Gregory Spencer of Winfield; his 21 grandchildren, Kanoe, Kalina, Kaala, Keola, Kimberly, Kuuipo, Christopher, Kaleo, Amy, Katherine, Jesse, Leinani, Elizabeth, Cordell, Matthew, Alton, Jr., Denver, Raymond, Aurora, and Abijah; and 50 great grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, August was preceded in death by his sister Rose Lo, brother James Lo, and grandchild Kealii.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, September 15, 2025, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Sunday, September 14, 2025, from 2 to 5 P.M. The family will greet friends during this time.
