Betty L. Kaats
1940 - 2024

Betty L. Kaats, 84, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Monday morning, November 18, 2024 at her home.

Born July 7, 1940, in McAlester, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of William and Dolly (Martin) Marshall. She was raised and received her education in the McAlester area, graduating from Crowder High School in 1958.

She was united in marriage to the love of her life James “Jim” Kaats on August 5, 1969 in Eufaula, Oklahoma. The couple made their first home in McAlester, where Betty worked as a secretary in a law office before working for the Judge. In 1977, the family moved to Burden, Kansas. In addition to being a loving wife and homemaker, Betty worked at the grocery store in Burden and the Burden Cafe. Jim preceded her in death on March 31, 2004.

She was a member of Burden United Methodist Church. She enjoyed listening to music, reading, and participating in the women’s group at church.

Her family includes her son Douglas Wade Hammonds of Burden; her daughter Susan Kaats (Matthew Comstock) of Burden; her son-in-law Dale Jenkins; her grandchildren, Colby Hammonds, Casey Hall, Taylor Jenkins, Cody Jenkins and wife, Megan, Dion Hammonds; and her great grandchildren, Kyler Villa, Drelyn Hall, Daxx Warren, Dane Jenkins, Ava Bigger, and Katlin Bigger.

In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by a son Mark Hammonds and two sisters, Violetta Haggard and Mary Sue Mounce.

A visitation will be held at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 4 to 8 P.M. on Friday, November 22, 2024. The family will greet visitors from 4 to 6 that evening. Private graveside services will be held at the Burden Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Betty’s name for the Burden United Methodist Church and for Joseph’s Storehouse. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
