1937-2025
Burl George Anglemyer 87, of Winfield, Kansas died comfortably and peacefully in the early morning hours of September 24, 2025. He had the good fortune of being in his home with his wife, Sharon and their three children nearby.
Burl was born on November 1, 1937, in Winfield, Kansas. He was the son of Roy and Nadine (Barnett) Anglemyer. Burl grew up on a farm east of Winfield and spent his grade school years in small one-room rural school houses. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1955.
After high school, he enrolled in college at Cowley County Community College. There, he participated in track and field running middle and long-distance races. He then attended Southwestern College, in Winfield, where he also ran track. At the conclusion of his college education, he received a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in 1959.
Burl was united in marriage to Sharon Wood on July 15, 1961. The couple made their first home in Winfield. Burl began his career in law enforcement with the Winfield Police Department in 1960. There, he made a number of good friends with whom he has maintained life-long relationships. In 1968, he joined the Kansas State Highway Patrol (KHP), and the family moved to Junction City for one year. He then transferred to Wellington, where he served for eleven years on the KHP. In Wellington, he was tasked with covering Sumner County. He was known in the law enforcement community as a person of integrity and ethics. He also spent many days and nights on the phone with local citizens who sought his wisdom regarding legal issues they were experiencing. If he could not answer their questions, he would refer them to legal-council. When someone needed help, he would never hesitate to be there for them.
Burl’s next adventure involved his promotion to sergeant. This was an assignment that he was honored to receive. Dodge City, Kansas became the family home for the next 32 years. In retirement, he could not leave law enforcement behind. After retiring from the Kansas Highway Patrol in 1994, he went to work for the Ford County Sheriff’s Department and retired once again in 2010. He conducted a number of jobs for Ford County’s legal and judicial systems.
Now, fully retired, Burl and Sharon moved to Omaha, Nebraska to be near their children. This was a wonderful time in his life as he made new friends and found time to watch the birds as they came to visit his back yard feeders. After more than a decade of living the “city life” they returned to their beloved home in Winfield.
Burl loved to run. He completed two marathons and countless 10,000-meter races. This writer believes that a faithful runner seeks fitness, the joy of the experience, and the challenge of the competition. He loved all these components of the run as they were the ingredients of success.
When his knees began to deteriorate, he took up bike riding. He enjoyed bike riding as a simple form of conditioning and the opportunity to ride with others or to simply enjoy the beauty of nature around him. In 2014, he rode across the state of Kansas in the Bike Across Kansas (BAK). This was a real highlight for him, and he often reflected on it in his later years.
Burl was also deeply interested in World War II history. He often read and studied WWII and how its impact so deeply influenced the nations that fought for freedom in the face of tyranny. As he became more homebound, he would watch WWII history documentaries on television. Having lived through the later years of the war, he resonated with the hardships that people faced in that time.
Burl loved his family and friends, and he loved God. Being close to the church was important to him. Perhaps it was the violence and pain that often comes to law enforcement officers that kept him close to the teachings of Jesus. Throughout his life he was “tied” into the church. He met and married his wife at church. He watched as his children were baptized into church. And he gave to the church what is asked, his time, talents, gifts, service, and witness.
His family includes his wife Sharon of Winfield; his son Chad Anglemyer and wife, Susan of Omaha, NE; his daughters, Jan Kaufman and husband, Steve of Azial, TX; Tammy Anglemyer and wife, Sandy of Dodge City; his brother Arlan Anglemyer and wife, Wilma of Winfield; his grandchildren, Kayleigh, Brandon, Britt, and Taylor; Katherine, and Sarah, his great grandchildren, Wyatt, Jordyn, Lea, Addison, Kale, and Tate; Charlie, Pasiley, Priscilla, Oliver, Jimmy, Evelyn, and Nora.
In addition to his parents, Burl was preceded in death by a brother Lawrence Anglemyer.
