Catherine Lee Shiever, 78, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, December 22, 2024, at her home.
Born June 19, 1946, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Ralph Dean and Minerva “Janeanne” (Cardwell) Fry. She was raised and received her early education in Winfield, before moving with her parents to Cairo, Egypt in 1953. She attended high school at Cairo American College, graduating in 1964. After high school, she returned to Winfield and lived with her grandmother while attending Southwestern College. She received a Bachelor degree in Biology from Southwestern College.
She was united in marriage to Dennis Shiever on August 19, 1967, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winfield. The couple made their home in numerous places early in their marriage including St. Louis, Missouri and Alberta, Canada. Catherine made her career as a Laboratory Technician in the medical field, beginning at hospitals in St. Louis and Alberta, Canada. The couple returned to Winfield where Catherine worked at Snyder Clinic as well as Dr. Winblad’s lab, before starting at William Newton Hospital. She remained at William Newton Hospital for many years until retiring in 2012. After retiring, Catherine and Dennis loved traveling. They visited 48 states during their travels, including cruises to Hawaii and Alaska. They particularly enjoyed finding Farmer’s Markets while traveling, discovering the best Farmer’s Market to be near Fresno, California.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the quilter’s group and enjoyed Pastor Hathaway’s Life Lite Program. She loved reading, and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and making candy from the recipes her grandmother taught her.
Her family includes her husband Dennis of Winfield; her children, Evert Dean Shiever and wife, Nara of Wichita; Ruthanne Denise Scudder and husband, Zach Head of Rosalia; her siblings, Frank Fry of Winfield; Dorothy Potter and husband, Patrick of Winfield; Linda Hanshaw of Winfield; her grandchildren, Deidra Perrigo and husband, Alex of Dexter; Alexandrea Shiever of Derby; and her great grandchildren, Raya and Jack Perrigo.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 27, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Thursday evening from 4 to 6 P.M.
A memorial has been established in Catherine’s name for Trinity Lutheran School. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
