Douglas Wade Hammonds

Douglas Wade Hammonds, 64, of Burden, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

Doug was born on May 19, 1961 in McAlester, Oklahoma. He was the son of James and Betty (Marshall) Kaats. Doug was raised and educated in McAlester, Oklahoma; Crowder, Oklahoma; and finally in Burden, Kansas, where he graduated from Central High School in 1979.

Doug married Judy Houk in Oklahoma. The couple had one daughter and later divorced. Doug worked various jobs in carpentry and construction. He was a jack of all trades. He also worked for many years at the Stigler Feed Mill in Oklahoma. Doug was a member of the Burden United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, grilling, and spending time with his family.

His family includes his daughter Tanya Hammonds Bigger (Cody); his sister Susan Kaats (Matthew Comstock); his grandchildren, Ava Bigger; Hennessey Bigger; Miley Anderson; and Corbin Hammonds; his nephews, Casey Hall (Lizzy); Taylor Jenkins; and Cody Jenkins (Megan); his great nephews, Drelyn; Dax; and Dane; and his adopted daughter Amy Nix and her children.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by a brother Mark Hammonds and a grandson Landen Shawn Anderson.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

A memorial has been established in Doug’s name to help defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
