Flozella “Dolly” Johnson, 99, of Arkansas City, KS passed away Saturday, November 16, 2024, at her home.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 25, 2024 at Parker Cemetery. No visitation is scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home.
Dolly was born on November 12, 1925, in Junction City, CO to parents Beril and Martha (Daratt) Anderson. The family moved to Arkansas City where she graduated from high school. After graduation, she went to Washington D.C. to participate in the secretarial pool for the IRS. While there, she met the love of her life, Reaford “Johnny” Johnson. The couple were united in marriage on June 2, 1945. After the war, they moved to Trinchera Ranch near Fort Garland, CO where Johnny worked as a mechanic and ranch hand. When Dolly began to suffer from altitude sickness, they moved back to Arkansas City.
When her children were all in high school, Dolly went to work at the Winfield State Hospital as a Psychiatric Aide, working with people who have mental health conditions, and developmental disabilities. By the time she retired, she was a Charge Aide supervising two wards at the state hospital.
After retiring, Dolly enjoyed traveling with her husband, working on various craft projects, and raising cockatiels and tropical fish. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Dolly is survived by her children Melvin Johnson, Robert Johnson (Rita), Ellen Simon, and Rex Johnson (Roe), grandchildren Elizabeth, Darrin, Stoney, Kristin, Kari, Kimberly, Jonathan “Jon,” Jayna, Robert “Jay,” Terrill, Shannon, Brad, Niki, 23 Great Grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings, George Anderson, Melvin Anderson, Ennis Anderson, Gerald Anderson, Neva Wiggins, and Viola Holden.
