James Dale “Jim” Lazelle, 88, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 14, 2025, at Winfield Senior Living Community.
Born June 17, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, he was the son of James Alvin and Edna Marie (Thompson) Lazelle. He was raised and received his education in Arkansas City, Kansas, graduating from Ark City High School in 1955. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country from 1955 to 1959. After receiving his honorable discharge, he remained in the Navy as a reservist for an additional 30 years until retiring in 1989. Upon returning to Arkansas City, he worked for Miller Tire while studying to be in Law Enforcement. He then joined the Cowley County Sheriff’s Department in 1964, eventually becoming the Undersheriff.
He was united in marriage to Juanita R. Moore in 1977. The couple made their home in Arkansas City and Jim began his career as a Detective with the Ark City Police Department in 1974. He remained with ACPD until retiring in 1998 as a Captain. Juanita preceded him in death on November 15, 2016.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Arkansas City and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, building furniture, fishing, and building model boats and airplanes.
His family includes his children, Marcia Stines and husband, Phil of Olathe; David Lazelle and wife, Connie of Bogalusa, LA; Lori Ann Futhey and husband, Rob of Grenola; his sister Kathleen Bowman of Lawrence; his grandchildren, Krista Mealman, Mike Lundy, Cristen Bahr, Nicki Llamas, David O. Lazelle; and his 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by a son Roger Lundy.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 19, 2025 at Burden Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at Miles Funeral Service on Sunday afternoon, May 18, 2025 from 2 to 4 P.M. The family will greet visitors at that time.
A memorial has been established in Jim’s name for the Arkansas City Police Department DARE Program. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
