James Raymond "JD" Determan, 68, passed away on July 25, 2026, in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
James was born on February 6, 1958, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Hugh Bernard and Doris Margaret (Kunkel) Determan. He was raised on the family farm in Haverhill, Iowa, and graduated from Marshalltown High School with the Class of 1976.
In 1981, James moved to Kansas while working for the railroad. He met Kimberly Hurst, and the couple was married on July 2, 1983, in Arkansas City, Kansas. Together they built a life and raised two daughters, Sara and Jennifer. James dedicated more than 40 years of service to Gott Corporation, later Rubbermaid, where he was known for his hard work and commitment.
James was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time on the water whenever he could. He was also a devoted fan of KU basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs. More than anything, he treasured his family. His greatest joy was talking about his three beloved grandchildren—Lexi, Peyton, and Brayden—of whom he was incredibly proud.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Doris Determan; his brother, Thomas Determan; and his father-in-law, Bill Simmons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Kimberly Determan; his daughters, Sara Banister and husband Clint of Newkirk, Oklahoma, and Jennifer "Jenni" Hasty and husband Bryson of Arkansas City, Kansas; and his cherished grandchildren, Lexi Hasty, Peyton Banister, and Brayden Hasty and his mother-in-law Sue Simmons of Ardmore, Oklahoma.
He is also survived by his siblings, Carol Edel and husband Tony of Louisiana; Sheila Rawe of Iowa; Charles Determan and wife Ann of Iowa; Duane Determan and wife Denise of Iowa; Gordon Determan and wife Tammy of Iowa; Wanda Determan of Iowa; and Nora Burkgren and husband James of Iowa. He also leaves behind 23 nieces and nephews, along with many extended family members and friends throughout the country and around the world.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Shelley Funeral Home in Arkansas City, Kansas.
