Jimmie Sam Day, 89, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, September 4, 2025.
Born September 16, 1935, in Winfield, he was the son of James Samuel. and Gladys C. (Eudaly) Day. He attended Wellington High School from seventh grade through his Junior year, returning to Winfield and graduating from Winfield High School in 1953. He attended K State for a short time.
He was united in marriage to Doris “Louise” Bowling on May 26, 1956, in Winfield. The couple made their home in Winfield. Jim made his career with the Kansas Department of Transportation for 43 years, retiring in 1997. Following retirement, Jim supervised the Bliss Street Project for the City of Winfield. Louise preceded him in death on December 10, 2003.
Jim was a lifelong member of First Christian Church where he served on numerous committees and volunteered many hours. He was actively involved with Meals on Wheels, the Winfield Food Pantry and the Cowley County Council on Aging. He enjoyed collecting coins, woodworking, and afternoon coffee time with his friends. He was known to always have candy in his pocket to share with others.
His family includes his daughter Shelly Stinson of Arkansas City; his son Jimmie Day and wife, Chelle of Winfield; his grandchildren, Heidi Loveridge and husband, Bryan of Leawood; Natalie Hancock and husband, Tyler of Lawrence; Casey Day of Bonita Springs, FL; Joey Day and wife, Hayley of Bonita Springs, FL; his step grandchildren, Brittany Donals and husband, Graham of Winfield; Bridgette Sena and husband, Zac of San Antonio, TX; Brooklene Barrett and husband, Justice of Wichita; his great grandchildren, Brynn, Hadley, Tucker, Josie, Ella; and his step great grandchildren, Beau, Jameson, Raleigh, Remy, Wesley, Juniper, and Eden.
In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by a brother Edward L. Day, sister Melva Lula Putman, his son-in-law Bill Stinson, and his K9 companion Zeke.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 12, 2025, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 to 8 P.M. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 that evening.
Memorials have been established in Jim’s name for the Cowley County Humane Society and for the Stinson Neurology Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
