John William Wilson, 88, of Atlanta, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, January 23, 2025, at the Kansas Veterans Home.
Born June 25, 1936, in what used to be the settlement of Polo, Kansas (west of Atlanta), he was the son of Clarence James and Rosena (Gordon) Wilson. He was raised and received his education in Atlanta, graduating from Atlanta High School in 1954. John served in the United States Army when he was 22 and 23 years old. He served in Cuba for one year and received an honorable discharge. He was an owner/operator and truck driver, as well as a farmer and the Maintenance Water and Sewer person for the City of Atlanta. He also drove for Price Truckline at Rubbermaid shagging trailers between plants, until an accident in 2017.
He served two terms as an officer of the Atlanta Coop and was a longtime member of the K&O Steam and Gas Engine Association. He was one of the first members of the Atlanta Volunteer Fire Department and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He enjoyed guns, hunting, numismatics, and restoring old iron and tractors.
In addition to his longtime friends Ira and Louise Underwood and their children, Justin Underwood and Amanda Ross, John is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and his two brothers, Jerry W. Wilson and Jim C. Wilson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Atlanta Cemetery.
