1930 - 2025
June Virginia Stites Barnthouse, 95, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Friday, March 28, 2025.
Born on March 8, 1930, on a farm near Wilmot, Kansas, she was the last of eight children born to Elliot Newton and Stella Ivy (Fry) Stites. June’s childhood was spent near Wilmot, moving to Hope and Hazelton, Kansas before moving to Winfield in her teens. She graduated from Winfield High School with the Class of 1949.
While working at the soda foundation in Bird’s Rexall Drug, June met a handsome Harry Barnthouse. They married on June 5, 1949, and made Winfield their lifelong home. They raised three daughters, Linda, Nancy, and Marsha. Harry passed after 66 years of marriage in 2015.
June was a strong, gentle, fun-loving Christian woman. She was a faithful member of the Winfield First Christian Church. Her steadfast faith in God was a comfort to her as she aged and faced health concerns.
June was employed at the local telephone office as a switch operator, Wonder Bread, Wheeler’s IGA, and Anthony’s clothing store. She enjoyed camping in her earlier years, playing games and cards, crafting, cooking, and walking. June loved reading daily devotions and her Bible, and spending time with her family in her home of 47 years.
Her family includes her daughters, Linda Barnthouse of Wichita; Nancy Wilson and husband, Keith of Winfield; Marsha King and husband, Kyle of Sun City, AZ; her grandchildren, Barclay Milton and husband, Howard of Champaign, IL; Brooke Wilson of Winfield; Chad Wilson of Winfield; Heather Cook and husband, Jeff of Phoenix, AZ; Amber King of Peoria, AZ; her great grandchildren, Connor, Claire, Callie, Avery, Max, Annie, Camryn, Kylee, Makena, Cooper; and a special friend Joan Krack.
June’s family would like to send a special thank you to the wonderful and devoted care providers at Winfield Senior Community Assisted Living and to Gentiva Hospice of Winfield.
At June’s request, a private graveside service will be held at Wilmot Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Gentiva Hospice of Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
