1951 - 2025
Larry Dean McPherson, 74, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, October 21, 2025, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on May 17, 1951, in Scott City, Kansas, Larry was the son of Kenneth V. and Pomona (Nevins) McPherson. He was raised in Scott City, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors and hard work. After high school, Larry proudly served two years in the Peace Corps in Brazil — an experience that reflected his generous spirit and heart for helping others. Upon returning home, he studied farm and ranch management at Coffeyville Vo-Tech College. As a young man, he worked alongside his father and uncle, as well as for area farmers, where he built a strong work ethic and lasting friendships.
On March 26, 1977, Larry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Gayle Horn, in Winfield. Together, they built a beautiful life and home filled with faith, laughter, and devotion to family. Larry worked for Rodeo Meats and General Electric before beginning a career at the Winfield Correctional Facility, where he served as a floor officer for eight years until his retirement.
Larry was a devoted member of Second Baptist Church in Winfield, where his faith guided his life and his relationships. He found joy in the simple things — hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his loved ones. His greatest happiness came from being a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Larry’s family includes his beloved wife, Gayle of Winfield; his children, Lynn McPherson of Winfield and Jennifer Gilmour and husband, Joshua of Wichita; his brothers, Terry and Gary McPherson, both of Denver, CO; his sisters, Nailah Ali of Indiana, Lucille Matthews and husband, Joe of Indianapolis, IN, Marilyn Cooper of Hudson, CO, and Sherry Whisenton and husband, Joe of Fort Collins, CO; and his treasured grandchildren, Aaron, Andrue, Gabbie, Sydnie, Mya, Damisha, Isaiah, Gideon, Atlas, Jaylyn, Jade, Emma, Mary, and Maggie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Hope Collier-McPherson; two brothers, Alvin and Derald; and a sister, Elanor.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Second Baptist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow at Union-Graham Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Miles Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Larry’s name for Second Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
Larry will be remembered for his kindness, faith, and unwavering love for his family — a legacy that will live on in all who knew and loved him.
