Margaret Ruth Johnson, 83, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, September 11, 2025, at the Glen Carr House in Derby.
Born May 11, 1942, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Robert C. and Minerva Lucinda (Graham) Cardwell. She was raised and received her education in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1960.
Margaret married Daniel Lee Johnson. The couple had three children and later divorced. Margaret attended Butler County Community College for nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for many years and also ran the medically fragile home at Creative Community Living until retiring from nursing. She worked part-time at the Winfield Sale Barn.
She was a member of the Winfield Saddle Busters, Cowley County 4-H, and the American Quarter Horse Association. She was a passionate lover of horses. She began training horses during high school at the fairgrounds. She enjoyed rodeos and fun shows and spent many years going to Pawhuska Round Up Calvacade, and going on trail rides.
Her family includes her children, Rachelle Roosevelt and husband, Mike of Augusta; Sharlene Johnson of Winfield; Stephen “Bud” Johnson and wife, Elizabeth; of Winfield; her brother Bruce Cardwell of Sonoita, AZ; five grandchildren, Jacob Cecchini-Roosevelt and wife, Miranda, Levi Rooselvelt, Andea Johnson, Samuel Cecchini and wife, Veronica; Devon Johnson; and two great grandchildren, Cayden Cecchini-Roosevelt and Liam Cecchini-Roosevelt.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her sisters, Minerva “Janeanne” Fry, Sharon Frazier, and brother Robert Cardwell.
The family will hold graveside services at Highland Cemetery and a visitation for friends at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Margaret’s name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
