Mary Luanne Warren
1941 - 2026

Mary Luanne Warren, 84, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, February 22, 2026, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Luanne was born May 15, 1941, in Wellington, Kansas. She was the daughter of John Bernard “Barnie” Engel and Dorothy E. (Pope) Engel. She was raised and received her education in Wellington, graduating from Wellington High School in 1959. She earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Fort Hays State College in 1963.

She married Dave Warren on June 5, 1970. They shared 41 wonderful years together until his passing on April 18, 2011. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed travelling together. Luanne and Dave rarely missed a baseball game which son Mike coached. Luanne also enjoyed accompanying Dave on his football and basketball officiating assignments, creating many lasting friendships.

She dedicated her professional career to education and the encouragement of young people. She began teaching and coaching at Campus High School in Wichita, and spent the final 23 years of her career teaching girls’ physical education at Winfield Middle School. Luanne loved her students and took great pride in helping them believe in themselves and discover their potential.

During and after her teaching career, Luanne was active in the community with the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and with the Winfield Recreation Commission, teaching swimming classes and aerobics classes, including the Silver Sneakers program.

Luanne was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She also found great joy spending time with family and friends. She loved scrapbooking and creating handmade seasonal, birthday, and encouragement cards for her family members. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining, and she and Dave were well known for hosting their annual Christmas open house for friends and family.

Luanne will be remembered for her warm spirit, endearing sense of humor, and her ability to encourage others with kind words and genuine care.

Survivors include her sons, Mike (Debbie) Warren of Wichita and Pat (Angie) Warren of Kansas City; her brother, Mike (Dee) Engel of Wichita; grandchildren, Brian Schriner, Shane Warren, Amanda Schnoebelen, Zachary Warren, Anthony Warren, and Natalie Malnar; nephew Brian Engel and niece Stacey Hand; and 8 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas. Private family burial will take place at Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Luanne’s name for the Winfield First United Methodist Church, Cumbernauld Village, or the Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
