1947 - 2025
Norma L. Nearhood, 77, of Andover, Kansas, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 9, 2025, at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover.
Norma was born December 27, 1947, in Newkirk, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Claire and Mary Marcine (Coate). She was raised and received her education in Newkirk, graduating from Newkirk High School in 1966. She worked many years as a LMHT at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. Later, Norma worked as the Control Officer for the Winfield Correctional Facility. She received Officer of the Year for the State of Kansas in 1997.
She was united in marriage to Terry Nearhood in 1974. The couple made their first home in Halstead and later in Winfield. Terry preceded her in death on July 31, 1991. Norma was the proud President of the Resident’s Council at BelVilla Assisted Living. She had a strong faith and enjoyed watching scary movies, reading, and baking. She loved working in her yard, being in the sun, and gardening. She loved people and would do anything for anyone.
Her family includes her son Darren Nearhood of Wichita; her brother Lee Coate and wife, Terri of Sedan; sister-in-law Kathy McCarter of Enid, OK; her best friend Marsha Spangler; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Norma was preceded in death by a son Glenn R. Nearhood and a brother Larry McCarter.
A Celebration of Life come and go gathering will be held at Miles Funeral Service on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 2 to 4 P.M. Private interment will take place at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Norma’s name for the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
