Verle Ellen Groom, 95, of Douglass, Kansas, passed away Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2025, at her home.
Born July 29, 1930, in Attica, Kansas, she was the daughter of Vallie Hanson and Cordelia S. (McNees) Marsland. She was raised and received her early education in Caldwell, Kansas, and Norwich, Kansas, before moving to Latham to attend high school.
She was united in marriage to Don E. Groom on September 2, 1947 in Canadian, Texas. The couple made their first home in Russell, Kansas. The couple lived all over Kansas and Oklahoma during their marriage including Atlanta, Kansas; Davenport, Oklahoma; Skiatook, Oklahoma; Ringling, Oklahoma; Nowata, Oklahoma; and Douglass, Kansas. Verle was a loving and dedicated homemaker, mother, and wife. She enjoyed being the wife of a Baptist Pastor for many years. Don preceded her in death on April 13, 2005.
Her family includes her daughters, Sandra Bass of Douglass; Cindy Sellers of Ada, OK; her son Clifford Groom and wife, Louise of Skiatook, OK; and her ten grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, Verle was preceded in death by four sons, Don, Charles, Steven, and Robert, a grandson Don Wayne Groom, a brother Dennis Wayne Marsland and a sister Esther Marie Lahtenan.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at Wilmot Cemetery north of Winfield, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial has been established in Verle’s name for Union Rescue Mission in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
