Ark City track and field takes two silvers at state; Winfield girls 4×800 relay team nabs 4th

Ark City and Winfield track and field athletes represented Cowley County well at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships over the Memorial Day weekend in Wichita.

The Ark City girls 4×100 relay team of sophomores Saliyah Johnson, Kierslynn Waggoner, Kinzie Perdue and Savannah Phillips took silver in class 5A with a time 49.77. St. James Academy finished first with a time of 49.02. Andover Central was third at 49.80.

Phillips went home with one more silver in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.36. Andover junior McKinlee Walker took first with a time of 14.44.

Johnson took fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 34-10.75.

Ark City senior Senior Braden Blatchford took sixth in the shot put with a mark of 50-7.25 and Bulldog freshman Karson Palmer was 11th in the discus.

The Ark City girls 4×800 relay team of Waggoner, Jasmine Calvo, Kennedy Barnes, Natalia Onelio and alternate Shay Wyckoff took finished 14th.

The Vikings girls 4×800 relay team of seniors Kayli Myers and Gracelynn Benavides, juniors Brooke Brogan and Lauryn Turner, sophomores Rhyanna Richert and Lydia Nelson, and freshman Mattie Smith took the medal stand with a fourth place finish at 10:16.64.

Benavides took 10th in the 800m.

Senior Tatayanna Lopez tied for 10th in the high jump for the Vikings while sophomore Layla Harris was 15th in the long jump.

The Winfield boys 4×800 relay team of seniors Mark Thompson, Andru Owens, junior Jaden Brown, and sophomores Gabriel Tapia and Nikolas Smith took 13th with a time of 8:48.74.

Thompson was 11th in the 3200m with a time of 10:19.36 and Viking senior Kayli Myers finished 12th in the 1600m. Mason Peters, another Winfield senior, finished 12th in the girls discus.
