Winfield and Ark City track and field will be well-represented at state this weekend in Wichita, starting Friday at Cessna Stadium.

The Bulldogs qualified four individuals and two teams for 5A competition, while Winfield is sending seven individuals and two teams for 4A.

For Ark City, the girls 4×100 team of sophomores Saliyah Johnson, Kierslynn Waggoner, Kinzie Perdue and Savannah Phillips finished first at regionals and ran with a time of 49.33 — shattering the school record they set the previous weekend in league competition of 50 flat.

They are the top seed for state in the 4×100.

Johnson also set a new school record individually in the triple jump at regionals with a jump of 35’8.25” and captured the silver in regionals.

Phillips, who set a new school record in the league meet twice in the 100 hurdles, broke her own record again and medaled second with a time of 15.33. She then took first in the 300m — setting the school record (again) with a time of 46.55.

Senior Braden Blatchford took second at regionals for the Bulldogs in the shot put and is seeded sixth for state, while freshman Karson Palmer took third in the discus at regionals and will represent Ark City as the 11th seed for state.

The girls 4×800 relay team of Waggoner, Jasmine Calvo, Kennedy Barnes, Natalia Onelio and alternate Shay Wyckoff took fourth at regionals and also qualified for state competition.

The Vikings girls 4×800 relay team of seniors Kayli Myers and Gracelynn Benavides, juniors Brooke Brogan and Lauryn Turner, sophomores Rhyanna Richert and Lydia Nelson, and freshman Mattie Smith took first at 4A regionals and are seeded second for state.

Benavides took second at regionals in 800m and was a state qualifier.

Senior Tatayanna Lopez qualified for two events, the 100m hurdles and the high jump, while sophomore Layla Harris made the cut for state in the long jump.

The boys 4×800 relay team of seniors Mark Thompson, Andru Owens, junior Jaden Brown, and sophomores Gabriel Tapia and Nikolas Smith finished fourth at regionals and will represent the Vikings at state.

Thompson also qualified for state in the 3200m while fellow senior Trey Thiel finished second in the 800m at regionals and will be seeded 14th at state.

Viking senior Kayli Myers is seeded 4th at state in girls 1600m and Mason Peters, another Winfield senior, will represent the Vikings in the girls discus throw.
