Kapaun to drop to 4A in new KSHSAA football classifications

The Kansas State High School Activities Association has announced classification changes for 2024-25 Monday.

For football, Ark City, Winfield and Wellington solidly remain in 4A, but there’s a new addition: Kapaun Mt. Carmel, a Wichita private Catholic school.

Kapaun was previously in 5A, but drops to 4A with an enrollment of 682 — the enrollment cutoff for 4A.

The enrollment range for 4A starting next year is 682-331 with 32 schools. It was 663-330 for 2022-23, also with 32 schools.

Lenexa-St. James Academy, who defeated Ark City for the 4A football title in 2020, moves up to 5A along with Basehor-Linwood and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Kansas City-Sumner Academy and Lansing drop from 5A to 4A.

Maize, previously 5A, will move up to 6A in in all sports. Wichita West also moves up from 5A to 6A.

In changes for other area schools, Anthony-Harper-Chaparral move up to 3A and Belle Plaine goes to 2A from 1A.

South Sumner, which includes Caldwell and South Haven, will move to 1A from 8-man.
