By ALISHA CALL, USD 470 – With the start of a new school year around the corner, Arkansas City Public Schools is excited to welcome families who are sending their children to PreK or Kindergarten for the first time.

“We know this is a big milestone for families,” said Tara Taylor, Head Start Director for USD 470. “Our team is here to support students every step of the way and make sure they feel safe, valued, and excited to learn.”

USD 470 early learning classrooms are built to help children grow in all areas—academics, communication, creativity, and confidence. Through hands-on play and real-life experiences, students explore topics that are meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives. Along the way, they build important early skills in reading, math, science, language, and more.

“Our classrooms are joyful, structured spaces where kids can explore, ask questions, and learn through play,” Taylor said.

Students also practice important life skills, such as making friends, expressing emotions, and solving problems. A consistent classroom routine helps them feel secure and ready to learn.

To help families prepare for the transition to school, USD 470 encourages parents to start with a few simple steps at home. Tips adapted from Brightly.com’s “10 Things You Can Do This Summer to Get Your Child Ready for Kindergarten” include:

  • Read aloud every day. Reading together builds vocabulary, sparks curiosity, and sets the stage for academic success.
  • Practice independence. Help your child work on tasks like getting dressed, opening lunch containers, and following directions.
  • Talk and play. Everyday conversation and imaginative play help build strong language and thinking skills.
  • Get on a school schedule. In the weeks leading up to school, begin adjusting bedtime and morning routines to match the school day.
  • Focus on confidence. Play “school” at home or visit the classroom to help your child feel more comfortable before the first day.

Families are also encouraged to download the CDC Milestone Tracker app. This free tool helps parents track their child’s development and offers tips and activities that support school readiness.

USD 470 emphasizes strong attendance starting in PreK. “When students come to school consistently, they build stronger routines and make more progress—both socially and academically,” Taylor said.
