The Arkansas City Board of Education on Monday set the 2026 Arkansas City High School commencement for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Bulldog Stadium, with the large gym as a backup in case of bad weather.
Assistant Superintendent Braden Smith reported strong gains in state assessment scores, particularly in grades 3, 4 and 6. English language arts, math and science scores all improved, with fewer students scoring at the lowest levels and more reaching proficiency. Eighth grade science posted the highest percentage of top-level scores across all subjects. Smith said the results reflect the dedication of students and staff.
The board also received an update on mold testing and prevention at Arkansas City Middle School. Recent efforts include roof repairs following June’s hailstorm, improved drainage, and use of dehumidifiers. Additional testing is scheduled this weekend.
In personnel matters, the board accepted the upcoming retirement of Virginia Richerson, sixth grade reading teacher at ACMS, at the end of the 2025–26 school year. Other resignations included Tammy Beach Wise, custodian at ACMS, and Aurora Gonzales-Torres, SAT at Jefferson. New hires included Gary Brewer as bus aide and Brenda Wood as custodian.
Other actions included:
Accepting gifts totaling more than $1,000 from the Salvation Army and Central Christian Church.
Hearing a report from Communications Director Alisha Call on projects such as the “Disconnect to Reconnect” phone-free campaign and staff recognition efforts.
Approving debit cards for elementary petty cash accounts and closing the Lincoln Elementary petty cash account.
Reviewing enrollment, now at 2,830 students, which will determine KSHSAA football classifications for 2026–27 and 2027–28.
Receiving an update on the district’s Nov. 4 bond election outreach, which includes presentations, handouts, and digital campaigns.
The board also met in executive sessions on personnel and property acquisition. No action followed either session.
