Anthony Whetstone has stepped down from his coaching and Student Council sponsor roles at Ark City High School but will continue teaching at the school, according to a district spokesperson.
USD 470 spokesperson Alisha Call told Cowley Post on Thursday that Whetstone “stepped down from his supplemental roles but continues to teach at ACHS.” She said the district’s focus remains on supporting students and ensuring programs and activities continue without disruption.
Call said the Board of Education will act on any hires or resignations at its next meeting on Monday, Oct. 13. Whetstone had been a girls wrestling coach and an assistant football coach.
He was reinstated to his positions earlier this month after being placed on paid administrative leave. The district said at the time that the decision followed “a careful and comprehensive review process.”
He had been under investigation after allegations that he made inappropriate remarks about the Sept. 10 shooting of national political figure Charlie Kirk, an accusation Whetstone denied.
Officials said USD 465 in Winfield was also involved in the review because Whetstone is employed through that district but assigned to Arkansas City High School.
Whetstone did not immediately reply to a message seeking comment. We’ll share any response we receive.
