A local man has been sentenced to probation in connection with a shooting that occurred on Black Friday of last year in the Winfield Walmart parking lot.
Jason Andrew Taylor, 40, was sentenced Monday in Cowley Co. Dist. Court, to 24 months of probation after being found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He received an underlying two-year prison sentence and was credited with 148 days already served in jail.
Should he fail to abide by conditions of his plea agreement with the state, he could be made to serve any or all of the underlying sentence.
Charges stemmed from a Nov. 29, 2024 incident outside Walmart at 2202 Pike Rd. No one was injured when gunfire broke out in the parking lot around 3 p.m. that day. Winfield Police investigated extensively to determine what took place as all involved had left the scene.
Eventually, Taylor was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle.
Investigators later determined that Taylor approached a vehicle with his gun drawn but did not fire immediately.
Evidence gathered from video footage, photographs, and witness statements indicated that a person inside the vehicle likely fired first, leading to an exchange of gunfire that frightened several people nearby. Cowley County Larry Schwartz provided information about the case as he explained the plea agreement and reduction in initial charges.
It’s unlikely charges will be filed against anyone else involved in the matter, the county attorney said Monday.
