The South Central Kansas Music Educators Association has selected Arkansas City High School Band Director Chris VanGilder as the SCKMEA Outstanding High School Music Educator for 2025–2026.
VanGilder has devoted 35 years to teaching, including 27 years leading the ACHS band program. He teaches every part of the music curriculum — marching and concert band, jazz band, pep band, and chamber ensembles.
“Mr. VanGilder has made a difference for countless students over the years,” USD 470 Superintendent Dr. Ron Ballard said. “He leads with care, skill, and consistency, and our district is better because of him. We are proud to see his work recognized with this honor.”
Colleagues describe his classroom as a place where students rise to high expectations, take pride in their work, and grow into confident young adults. They highlight his calm leadership and steady commitment to students, along with his ability to help them discover their strengths as they work through challenges. Parents and former students often say his influence extends far beyond music, noting that he teaches responsibility, leadership, and respect along with musicianship.
One colleague wrote that VanGilder’s guidance has strengthened the entire music community in Arkansas City. Another shared that he is patient, well-prepared, and dedicated, creating a program where students feel valued and supported. Many noted the joy of watching students progress under his direction, from their first steps in middle school band to the confidence they display on the high school stage.
Outside the classroom, VanGilder has also led the Arkansas City Community Band for 15 years, directing musicians of all ages in annual summer concerts at Wilson Park.
USD 470 is proud to celebrate this well-earned honor. Please join us in congratulating Chris VanGilder on being named the 2025–2026 SCKMEA Outstanding High School Music Educator.
