Arkansas City officials traveled to Topeka last week to take part in a check presentation recognizing two Community Development Block Grant awards from the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The event was held March 11 at the Kansas State Capitol. Arkansas City was the only community in the state to receive two CDBG awards during the 2025 funding cycle, totaling $928,728 for housing rehabilitation and improvements at Wilson Park.

The city received a $300,000 housing rehabilitation grant to fund improvements to nine homes, including five rental units and four owner-occupied properties. The project also includes demolition of two vacant, blighted structures and is aimed at improving housing conditions and supporting neighborhood revitalization. Continue below ad.

A second grant of $628,728 will fund upgrades at Wilson Park, including installation of new playground equipment designed to create a more inclusive space for children and families. The V.J. Wilkins Foundation is contributing a $50,000 match toward the project.

City Manager Randy Frazer said the recognition highlights the work of city staff and partners who helped secure the funding.

“Arkansas City was honored to be the only community in Kansas to receive two CDBG awards during the 2025 funding cycle,” Frazer said. “I’m proud of our team for their continued commitment to projects that improve our community and enhance quality of life.”
