Phil I. Chenoweth
1934-2026

Phil I. Chenoweth, 91, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Saturday morning, April 11, 2026, at his home.

Born October 11, 1934, on a farm outside of Burden, Kansas, he was the son of Ralph E. and Blanche Elizabeth (Scott) Chenoweth. He was raised and received his education in rural Atlanta, graduating from Atlanta High School in 1952. After high school, he moved to Washington D.C. where he worked as a Clerk for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He then returned home and attended Cowley County Community College until enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1954.

He was united in marriage to Nancy J. Barnes on November 26, 1955, at the Methodist Church in Atlanta. The couple traveled a lot in the early years with Phil’s career in the Air Force. They were stationed all over the United States and Southeast Asia, including at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California, Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas, Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma, as well as living in Texas, Alabama, and Georgia. Phil received his honorable discharge on January 31, 1974, and the couple moved to Derby, Kansas.

Following his decorated military service as a pilot, Phil attended Wichita State University, graduating with a Bachelor degree in Accounting. He then worked as an Accountant for KG&E and later as an Auditor for Federal Land Bank. He would then become the Comptroller at Southwestern College before returning to Atlanta, where he farmed until retiring.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Free Masons, and the Shriners. In addition to reading, he enjoyed volunteering his time. He volunteered for many area charities, including Camp Horizon, Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and Grace United Methodist Church.

His family includes his wife Nancy of Winfield; his children, Greg (Judi) Chenoweth of Winfield; Teresa Vetter of Wichita; Julie (Shari) Chenoweth of Wichita; his grandchildren, Lindsay Bowker and Evan Sprague; and his great grandchildren, Abigail Bowker, Emilee Bowker, Elizabeth Bowker, and Edith Sprague.

In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by a brother George Chenoweth and a grandson Christopher Sprague.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Phil’s name for the American Heart Association, Harry Hynes Hospice, and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
